What We Do: Brief Overview

PRI helps makes accessible the history of the Earth system, and the science by which we understand it, to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The chart below provides an overview of the distribution of our programming emphases and scales.

Within this broad spectrum of what PRI calls "Earth system change education," we devote special effort to two areas of strength and societal significance, climate change and evolution.  "Earth 101" provides the foundations of Earth system education -- how the Earth works, and how through science we know about the geologic past and why a place looks the way it does.

PRI outreach provides outreach within the surrounding Finger Lakes region and Southern Tier of New York State, but also provides presentations and resources for use across the country. By trying and evaluating innovative new ideas locally, PRI aims to create effective new approaches that can be implemented anywhere. And PRI staff regularly participate in local and national initiatives to consider improving the quanity and quality of science education nationally.
