New York's Forests

In fact, according to New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), forests cover 18.46 million of our 30.22 million total acres. Just over a hundred short years ago, due to over-logging and agriculture, forests covered only about 25% of New York State.

Did you know that New York State has two forest preserves?

Some 2.7 million acres of the Adirondack Forest Preserve and 288,000 acres of the Catskill Forest Preserve are protected as "forever wild." In addition to the Forest Preserves, the DEC manages more than 770,00 acres of State Forests.

Did you know that the only national forest in New York State is located right here in the Finger Lakes?

The Forest's Ranger station is located on Route 414 in Hector, NY.

Did you know that forest-based manufacturing, tourism, and recreation contribute over $8.8 billion annually to New York's economy, and employ over 60,000 poeple statewide?
