Direct Air Capture
August 24, 2023
Is direct air capture a good idea?
No! It's really expensive and it probably uses a huge amount of energy to run giant machines to do this. We have a lot simpler and less expensive solutions.

I'm eager to see how well they work. I think it's really important to pull CO2 out of the air, both for stopping to heat the Earth, AND to stop acidifying the ocean.

To say if it's a good idea, I'd want to know how much it costs to build and run it, how much energy it uses (and from where), and how much CO2 it pulls in. What are the alternatives, and what's the cost of not doing it?
-Ingrid
Even though it's expensive, I think we need to test these kinds of projects. If they work, and we can make them less energy-intensive and costly, it could help a lot.

WHy are they being built in Texas and Louisiana, big oil-producing and refining states?
