Southwest Heat Wave June 2021

There's no one "worst thing," as the graphic shows, each impact is related to the others and there is a ripple effect. We need to understand the interlocking systems that we are perturbing in order to prevent unexpected and damaging consequences.

Heat waves kill. What's happening now in Pacific Northwest is unprecedented and their not prepared for it - many don't have AC and it hit 116 in Portland, OR. People are surely dying in the US right now because of this heat. It's heartbreaking. And, it's not limited to the Northwest, and the summer is really just starting.

What is the worst thing about extreme heat?

California wild fires.

The risk to people's health is really scary. I think people who don't work outdoors on a regular basis don't understand how hard (and dangerous) it can be.

Soil becomes dried out, plants die, which give off oxygen. Animals start to die due to starvation.
