Wind Turbines and Bird Deaths

October 27, 2023

Should we stop using wind energy, to save birds?

Over 2 billion bird deaths from being hunted by cats - WOW! If I had a pet cat, I would keep it indoors. I don’t think bird deaths should stop us from using wind energy.

It’s a tradeoff. Birds die from colliding with wind turbines, but wind energy pollutes the air and water a lot less than burning coal or oil for electricity. And using more wind energy will slow down heating the planet. All in all, I think wind energy is better for birds. But I’m sad about birds hitting wind turbines.

This graph is heartbreaking. It’s sad to think of all the things we humans are doing that are harming birds. This includes changing the climate, so that migration cycles are not synching up with food sources. And pollution. I hate to think of any bird deaths, but wind turbines don’t seem to be the main problem.
